This week, many unbelievable things happen. Stan gets addicted to crack, Steve almost gets laid and American Dad overall gets worse.
I have nothing positive to say anymore. Really, this show has gone downhill so fast it’s almost unreal. Every week, they come up with an almost passable plot and completely ruin it. This week, as said, Stan gets addicted to crack and of course, goes through all the highs and lows of it. At the same time, Steve meets a girl who likes nerds and has a chance with her, which Stan obviously ruins, because this show hates good plots almost as much as changing the status quo of…well, anything.
In comparison of cartoons, some things are clear. The Simpsons sometimes make social comments and it usually works. The Venture Bros bring up the most absurd situations and manage to be funny. American Dad, I have no idea what they are trying to do and it comes off as completely unfunny, annoying and more with every episode – pointless. Even South Park has it’s moments despite kind of turning into the same plain Simpsons-clone who can’t get out of the circle of doing the same thing over and over again for 20 years.
As for the episode, well. It shows Stan’s addiction in a way every Hollywood movie presents it and has the family once again simply take it and wait for his latest crazy idea to pass. He sees bright lands and pink ponies and beautiful flowers and all the other things. He goes crazy and refuses to get help, because he claims everyone should handle themselves. He nearly lets Hayley die and everything else a normal father does.
All around him the stuff gets even worse. Steve meets a pretty girl and his father demands only that they use condoms. Steve eventually passes out of his great misfortune, because Stan offers the girl’s father a blowjob, which is, yes, a thing that kind of ruins relationships between people. Stan takes the gay couple on their street hostage to make some quick cash and the sequence with the negotiator is the most annoying, pointless and absolutely absurd thing I have seen in a while.
I hope the season soon ends and never comes back, but unfortunately, at the moment it doesn’t look like it’s going to be like that. This show could use some new ideas, maybe just the smallest effort to make some character development, but what can we really expect from a cartoon like this. Personally, I would hope it has the decency to go and die in a fire.
